Professional Qualifications
Climbing and mountaineering in the UK
Greta Gabbro VS, Ardnamurchan
The Association of Mountaineering Instructors is the representative body for professional instructors who have undergone rigorous training and assessment to qualify under Mountain Leader Training UK (MLTUK) guidelines
The Union of International Mountain Leaders is the International body representing holders of the IML. This qualification lets the holder lead groups in different mountains all over the world, where the skills of alpinism are not required. IMLs can work with groups on high altitude treks as well as leading groups on snow shoes. IML’s, from every member country, have to maintain International Continuing Professional Development (ICPD) to ensure that members are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in mountain leadership.
The British Association of International Mountain Leaders is the Professional Organisation representing and overseeing British holders of the IML award
The Mountain Leader Training Association is the body for holders of all levels of awards under the MLTUK scheme

As well as a First Class Honours Degree in Outdoor Education in the
Community I hold the following National Governing Body Qualifications:

Moutaineering Instructor Certificate
The Mountain Instructor Scheme provides comprehensive training and assessment
for individuals working as instructors in the mountains. It is designed for the specific
situations and conditions found in the UK. It integrates training, experience and
assessment in a variety of testing conditions in mountainous country.
The scheme provides training and assessment in the skills required to teach, train
and assess general mountaineering, rock and ice climbing and related activities.
There are two separate awards:
The Mountain Instructor Certificate, known as the MIC, covers the additional skills
required for winter mountaineering and winter climbing. It also includes elements of
training and assessment which the MLTUK feels are necessary for those advising and
directing other courses of training or related activities.

International Mountain Leader
The professional qualification for individuals who wish to lead trekking parties to all
mountain areas except on glaciers, and where the techniques or equipment of
alpinism are required.
The International Mountain Leader can also operate on easy snow-covered terrain,
providing it is of a gentle, rolling ("Nordic") type in the “middle” mountains.

Accredited Practitioner of The Institute for Outdoor Learning
This is the professional accreditation for Outdoor Practitioners that provides a
recognised industry standard in professional outdoor practise. It is achieved by
providing evidence of the integration and application of knowledge, values, technical
and interpersonal skils in your work and of a range of skills required for effective
outdoor learning beyond technical and safty qualifications.
