The Union of International Mountain Leaders is the International body representing holders of the IML. This qualification lets the holder lead groups in different mountains all over the world, where the skills of alpinism are not required. IMLs can work with groups on high altitude treks as well as leading groups on snow shoes. IML’s, from every member country, have to maintain International Continuing Professional Development (ICPD) to ensure that members are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in mountain leadership.
The British Association of International Mountain Leaders is the Professional Organisation representing and overseeing British holders of the IML award
The Mountain Leader Training Association is the body for holders of all levels of awards under the MLTUK scheme
This logo means that I am an approved provider of National Governing Body awards under Mountain Leader Training Scotland

A former Aeronautical Engineering Officer in the Royal Navy I went back to
university to take a First Class Honours Degree in Outdoor Education in the
Community at Strathclyde University.

I grew up in various countries around the world but learnt to climb and
mountaineer in the Highlands. Since I was 18 I've been travelling and
climbing both for work and for pleasure. To learn more about my overseas
trips click the button marked 'Expeditions' below.

At home I did a little postgrad work on the effects of overseas youth
expeditions and worked as a freelance outdoor instructor until being offered
a fulltime position as Assistant Manager at The Glasgow Climbing Centre
where as well as learning about the management of walls I was responsible
for running a large number of outdoor events and courses.
In 2003 I was offered the position of Centre Manager at a new climbing
centre called The Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. Until Nov. 2008 I was working
on the challenges of establishing a brand new centre with the biggest indoor
ice climbing wall in the world and creating its indoor and outdoor courses.

Since then I have been enjoying the life of a freelance instructor working for
my own clients, organisations such as Glenmore Lodge and The
Mountaineering Council of Scotland. I have been heavily involved in the
establishment of a new Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Pursuits Course at
UHI and the introduction of the APIOL scheme to Scotland and I am the
Technical Advisor to Glasgow Climbing Centre and Transition Extreme in
Aberdeen as well as 2 smaller walls.

In between all this I got married to Jane in 2005 and become a father to a
baby boy called Sandy in August 2008. I still have time to climb though - for
a gallery of some of my favourite climbs and days on the hill in the UK click
on the button marked 'My Climbs' below.

I truly love my job. Introducing people of all ages and levels of ability to
hillwalking, climbing and mountaineering is a real pleasure. Every day is made
interesting by the difference in weather, routes and people I get to work
with and why they are there and what they want to learn.
Feel free to contact me to discuss what I might be able to do for you. If I
can't help you myself I probably know someone who can.
